Plan to Succeed!

Woody Allen once said that "95% of success is to show up." For the other five percent, we need a goal, and a plan.

  • Visualize the outcome. What do you want to achieve? Set a specific, significant goal.

  • Work backwards – what steps are needed to get from where you are to where you want to be?

  • Set a reasonable deadline – consider how long each step will take, and estimate a time of completion. Don’t forget to set deadlines for each step, as well. (Sometimes, someone else, or life’s circumstances, will set your deadline for you, and you must adjust the timing of each of your steps accordingly.)

A typical set of steps might look like this:

Goal: Get A+ in a class

  • Do all the recommended reading

    • Ask the teacher for a reading list

    •  Take good notes while reading

        - Take tutorial on how to write good notes, if needed

  • Memorize key concepts

    • Have perfect attendance (allows you to be in the room when key concepts are being presented)

    • Pay attention in class

    • Take good notes

        - Take tutorial on how to write good notes, if needed

  • Get perfect scores on all quizzes

    • Do the assigned reading on the same day as assigned

      • Take good notes

      • Review notes

      • Memorize key concepts

  • Get perfect scores on midterm and final exams

    • Review notes

    • Memorize key concepts

    • Write good essays

      •  Take tutorial on how to write a good essay, if needed

  • Focus on the elements you can control, and frame your steps in positive language.

  •  Review your goal and steps on a regular basis. Circumstances change continually; adjust your planning and steps accordingly.
